Overtime Opener, Emerging Talent Set the Tone

Day 1 of the First Financial Classic at Terre Haute South Vigo High School delivered exactly what makes holiday tournaments must-watch events: contrasting styles, rising underclassmen, and veteran players answering challenges. From an overtime opener to a physical nightcap, the opening round provided a full day of competitive basketball and early indicators of which teams and individuals are positioned to make a deep run.

Martinsville vs. Shakamak: Day 1 opened with an overtime thriller, as Class 1A Shakamak pushed Class 4A Martinsville to the limit. Shakamak played with confidence and physicality, forcing the Artesians to rely on experience and collective execution to survive. Martinsville ultimately leaned on its teamwork to escape, but Shakamak set the tone for the day.

Edgewood vs. Linton-Stockton: Edgewood edged Linton-Stockton 50-49 in a game that came down to late execution. Linton was without Paul Oliver, who was ill and unable to compete, and his absence was felt in critical moments. Edgewood capitalized, showing poise in a tightly contested finish.

Bloomfield vs. Casey-Westfield: Casey-Westfield committed to limiting Bloomfield’s Blake Neil, last year’s Wabash Valley Classic Tournament MVP. Neil faced two defenders on nearly every touch, with a third often ready to help if he made an offensive move. The approach kept the game tight throughout, but Bloomfield, led by Neil, found enough answers late to secure a five-point win.

Terre Haute North vs. Cloverdale: Cloverdale struck early behind sophomore Toby Hart and 6-foot-10 sophomore Ishmael Kiteka. A clock operator error allowed Gavin Woelfle to hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first quarter, giving Terre Haute North a 19-18 lead. The highly visible error led to a prolonged reaction from Cloverdale coach Joey Hart, but the call stood. The momentum shift proved significant, as North settled in and pulled away for a 21-point win.

Greencastle vs. Parke Heritage: Parke Heritage made a statement with a 21-point win over Greencastle. Carter Crum scored 32 points on just 13 shot attempts, an efficient performance that immediately puts him in the all-tournament conversation. Parke Heritage continues to look like a title contender, though the road to the championship likely runs through defending champion Northview.

West Vigo vs. South Vermillion: West Vigo controlled the game from the opening tip, racing out to a 17-4 lead and never allowing it to become competitive in a 37-point win. Reed Dougherty, at 6-foot-9, provides a strong interior presence that allows the Vikings to play comfortably on both ends.

Terre Haute South vs. Northview: Northview showcased its trademark ball movement and balance against the host Braves. Senior guard Brayden Goff had a quiet scoring night but impacted the game in a variety of ways. The unselfish play benefited 6-foot-3 sophomore Quinn Lewis, who led the Knights in scoring. Terre Haute South junior Charlie Livers stood out defensively, blocking multiple shots and altering several others, while also knocking down a pair of 3-pointers on the offensive end.

Marshall vs. Sullivan: The nightcap featured Sullivan against Marshall and the debut of Christian Bryan in a Golden Arrows uniform. Marshall’s Payton McGuire, who recently reached the 1,000-point mark for his career, continues to show the ability to score at all three levels. Sullivan leaned on Bryan along with 6-foot-6 senior Cooper Bock to control the game, punctuating an 18-point win with a powerful dunk late.
